Introducing Total Media Converter: Convert Images, Video and Audio on Android
Phones collect files in formats that do not always play nicely with everything else. A HEIC photo from an iPhone will not open on an older PC. A WEBP image saved from a website is rejected by an upload form. A lecture recorded as a video is too large when all you need is the sound.
Total Media Converter is our Android app for exactly these moments. You pick a file, choose the output format and quality, and convert it on your phone. No account, no desktop software and no uploads.
What Total Media Converter does
The app converts between popular image, video and audio formats. Its main features, as listed on Google Play:
Image conversion
- HEIC (HEIF) to JPG, JPEG, PNG or WebP
- JPG or JPEG to HEIF with the built-in HEIF encoder (Android 9 Pie and above)
- WEBP to JPG, JPEG and other formats
- Metadata and color profile kept: when converting images, the app keeps the metadata and ICC color profile, so colors and capture details survive the conversion
Video and audio conversion
- Video formats such as MP4, MPEG and AVI
- Audio formats such as AAC, MP3 and FLAC
- Extract audio: pull the sound out of a video, for example MP4 to MP3, or convert back
Workflow features
- Queue converting: add several files and let them run in the background
- History tracking so you can find what you converted
- Quality choice to balance file size and quality
- Offline mode: files are processed on your device and not uploaded
- SD card import: read source files from an SD card (output is saved to internal storage)
Who it is for
- People switching from iPhone to Android who end up with a library of HEIC photos
- Anyone uploading images to forms, print shops or older software that only accept JPG or PNG
- Students and podcast listeners who want audio from recorded lectures or videos
- Small businesses preparing product images in a consistent format
How to convert a file
The flow is the same for images, video and audio:
- Install Total Media Converter from Google Play and open it.
- Grant storage access when asked. The app uses it to read your source files and save the converted copies, including for batch runs.
- Pick the file or files you want to convert.
- Choose the output format, for example JPG, PNG, MP3 or MP4.
- Choose the quality that fits your needs.
- Start the conversion. Large or multiple files continue in the background.
- Open the history to find and share the converted files.
The original files are left in place, so you can always convert again with different settings.
Practical examples
HEIC photos that will not open
HEIC keeps iPhone photos small, but many Windows PCs, websites and older apps cannot open it. Convert to JPG for photos you want to share widely, or PNG for screenshots and graphics. Our step-by-step guide covers this in detail: how to convert HEIC to JPG or PNG on Android.
WEBP images from the web
Images saved from websites are often WEBP. If an upload form rejects them, convert to JPG. Our comparison of WEBP to JPG converter apps for Android explains when to choose JPG or PNG.
Audio from a video
Extracting the audio track from a video saves a lot of storage and lets you listen with the screen off. Our guide to converting video to MP3 on Android explains containers, codecs and which audio format to choose.
Saving space with HEIF
Going the other way, the HEIF encoder can turn JPG photos into HEIF on Android 9 and above. HEIF files are typically smaller than JPG at similar visual quality, which helps when storage is tight.
Tips for better results
- Convert from the original. Re-converting an already converted lossy file loses more detail each time.
- Match format to content. JPG for photos, PNG for screenshots and graphics with sharp edges, MP3 or AAC for spoken audio, FLAC when you want full quality.
- Avoid spaces in file paths. The developer notes advise against spaces in folder or file names; rename files if a conversion fails.
- Mind the metadata. Because image conversion keeps metadata, a converted photo still carries its GPS location. If you plan to share it publicly, clean it afterwards with ExifTool. Our guide on batch removing GPS location from photos shows how.
Formats at a glance
If you are unsure what to pick, these rules of thumb cover most cases:
- Sharing photos with anyone, anywhere: JPG
- Screenshots, diagrams and images with text: PNG
- Saving storage on a modern phone: HEIF
- Listening to a lecture or podcast recording: MP3 or AAC
- Archiving music at full quality: FLAC
Privacy
Total Media Converter processes the files you choose on your device, and they are not uploaded to our servers. The app is free and ad-supported; ads and analytics run through third-party SDKs, as described in its privacy details on the app page.
