Best GPS Geotag Editor Apps for Android (EXIF vs. Stamp)

· alternatives · geotag editor · edit gps photo android · exif · gps

Photos end up with the wrong location more often than you might think. Location was off when you took the shot, the phone grabbed a stale fix, or a camera without GPS left the field empty. A geotag editor lets you fix that so your gallery’s map view, travel albums and photo software show the right place.

Before choosing an app, there is one distinction that matters more than any feature list: does the app write GPS into the file’s metadata, or does it stamp the location onto the picture? Many apps on Google Play called “geotag” or “GPS photo” do the second. Both are useful, but they solve different problems.

EXIF geotag vs. visible GPS stamp

If you want your photos to appear in the right place on a map, you need an EXIF editor. If you need visible evidence for a report, you want a stamp app, and for work proof we compare those in GPS Map Camera alternatives for work photos.

The options in detail

ExifTool for Android

ExifTool for Android is our app, built on Phil Harvey’s ExifTool. Its GeoTag editor adds or changes the GPS location on any photo by writing real metadata, so other apps and services read the new position.

It is free, ad-supported and offline-capable, and it is also available on iPhone and iPad.

Pros: true metadata editing across many formats, dates and locations in one place. Cons: no visible stamps; the full tag view is more technical than a simple location changer.

Photo Exif Editor (Banana Studio)

Photo Exif Editor is a well-known option for EXIF location editing. Its listing describes adding or correcting where a photo was taken using Google Maps, batch editing, and changing other tags such as camera model, capture time and orientation. It reads and writes EXIF in JPEG and PNG.

Pros: friendly map-based picker, batch support. Cons: JPEG and PNG only for writing; ads in the free version.

Exif Cleaner (MUDRAVA)

Exif Cleaner is mainly a metadata remover, but its optional Pro tools add JPEG editing, including changing or removing GPS coordinates and dates, and presets you can apply to multiple JPEG files. The free core cleans JPEG, HEIC, PNG and WebP and can remove GPS only from a JPEG while keeping other data. Its listing states it contains no ads.

Pros: no ads, good when privacy is the main goal. Cons: GPS editing requires Pro and is limited to JPEG.

Bulk Geotag Photo Editor (Abhi Ruk)

This is a stamp app. It adds GPS location, address, coordinates, a map snapshot, date and time, notes and more as a customizable overlay to up to 100 photos at once, with templates aimed at site engineers, surveyors and inspections.

Pros: fast bulk overlays, many templates. Cons: its listing describes visible overlays, not EXIF metadata, so map views will not move the photo.

GPS Photo: Location Map Tags (JB Andro)

GPS Photo combines a GPS camera with the ability to add location stamps to existing gallery photos, plus a location gallery that organizes photos by place and time.

Pros: camera and editor in one, photo map gallery. Cons: focused on visual stamps; ads and in-app purchases.

Summary

“Geotag” means two different things on Android. Stamp apps such as Bulk Geotag Photo Editor and GPS Photo draw location onto the image for people to see. EXIF editors write coordinates that software understands. For accurate maps and albums, use an EXIF editor; ExifTool for Android adds batch editing, date repair and the widest format support for free.

FAQ

What is the difference between an EXIF geotag and a GPS stamp?

An EXIF geotag is invisible data stored in the file, read by galleries, maps and photo software. A GPS stamp is text or a map drawn onto the picture itself. Stamps are visible to people but are not read by software as location data.

Can I add a location to a photo that has none?

Yes. EXIF editors such as ExifTool for Android and Photo Exif Editor can write GPS coordinates into a photo that was taken with location turned off.

Does changing the GPS location alter the image?

Writing EXIF coordinates only changes the metadata, not the pixels. Stamp apps do change the image, because they draw the location onto it and save a new picture.
